IPB University Directorate of International Education Holds Capacity Building and Enhancement Activity at Universitas Udayana, Bali
Bali, July 4, 2024 – The Directorate of International Education (DPI) of IPB University held a Capacity Building and Enhancement activity at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Udayana, Bali. This event aimed to deepen understanding of student well-being, both inbound and outbound, which is increasingly crucial amidst growing global academic demands. The event was hosted by Dr. Ni Made Swasti Wulandari, Coordinator of the Psychology Study Program at Universitas Udayana, and featured Dr. Jana Kochi from Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic, as the keynote speaker.
Dr. Jana explained the concept of well-being
Dr. Jana Kochi began the session with an in-depth discussion on the concept of well-being, which varies for each individual. She explained that well-being encompasses three interrelated dimensions: mental, physical, and social. According to Dr. Jana, well-being is a key factor that supports both academic and personal success for students, especially in a competitive international education environment.
“In the context of global higher education, attention to student well-being not only supports better learning outcomes but also enhances overall adaptability and happiness,” Dr. Jana stated.
Understanding student well-being is crucial for the DPI team as it directly impacts the quality of the academic experience for inbound and outbound students at IPB University. For inbound students, who are international students coming to IPB University, their well-being affects their adaptation to the new environment, academic needs, and social interactions with local students. Conversely, for outbound students, who are IPB University students studying abroad, their well-being influences their success in adapting to new academic and social cultures and overcoming challenges in their host country.
By effectively understanding and managing student well-being, the DPI team can ensure that inbound students receive adequate support to adapt and succeed during their studies at IPB University. For outbound students, this understanding helps in better preparing them to face the challenges of studying abroad and provides the necessary support to maintain their academic and personal balance.
At the end of the session, Dr. Jana introduced the well-being taggel, a spider chart evaluation tool that allows the DPI team to assess the personal well-being of each member. The DPI team was asked to score various categories, including positive emotions, engagement, social relationships, life meaning, achievement, physical health, mindset, environment, economic security, and authenticity. A scale from 5 to 10 was used to help the DPI team visualize and understand the balance in their lives through an easy-to-understand visual approach.
Integrating Well-Being into International Education Strategy
Through this activity, the Directorate of International Education at IPB University further reinforces its commitment to enhancing services and student well-being, especially for those involved in international education programs. The DPI continues to develop strategic approaches to support the academic and personal balance of students.
