IPB University Organizes Guest Lecture “Indonesia’s Transition to a Sustainable and Circular Economy”
IPB University’s Tropical Marine Economics Study Program, together with the Directorate of Global Connectivity, presented a Guest Lecture titled “Indonesia’s Transition to a Sustainable and Circular Economy”. This guest lecture was part of the 116th IPB Talk and was held in the Academic Senate Room, IPB Dramaga Campus (25/11).
This guest lecture presented an international speaker, Prof. Saleem Hassan Ali, a Blue and Gold Distinguished Professor of Energy and the Environment from the University of Delaware, USA.
As an expert in energy, environment, and sustainable development, Prof. Saleem brought deep insights into Indonesia’s transition to a sustainable and circular economy. The session was moderated by the Director of Global Connectivity, Dr. Eva Anggraini.
The Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management of IPB University, Dr. Irfan Syauqi Beik said in his speech that circular economy can be an alternative to overcome sustainability problems. This can be one of the efforts to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs) in 2030.
In his presentation, Prof. Saleem Ali highlighted the importance of Indonesia’s economic transition from a linear economic model based on natural resource extraction to a more sustainable circular economy.
“Indonesia, as a country with great potential in the marine and mining sectors, must adopt an approach based on innovation and collaboration,” he explained.
Prof. Saleem conveyed the importance of applying circular economy principles to reduce pressure on the environment and support Indonesia’s economic sustainability.
He also explained how collaboration between academia, government, and industry can accelerate this transition, given Indonesia’s great potential as an archipelago with rich marine biodiversity.
The event became an interactive discussion between students, lecturers, and practitioners from various disciplines. The participants were very enthusiastic following the presentation given by Prof. Saleem, especially in understanding how the implementation of circular economy can be a solution to address global challenges such as plastic waste, climate change, and overutilization of natural resources.
Through this guest lecture, it is expected to strengthen international collaboration between IPB University and the University of Delaware in the field of research and education for sustainability. Hopefully, this activity can provide new insights and inspiration for the academic community and the general public in supporting the sustainability agenda in Indonesia. (*/Rz)
