IPB University Establishes Collaboration with Karume Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), Zanzibar, Tanzania

Bogor, February 18th, 2025 – IPB University strengthens its international position by forging a strategic partnership with the Karume Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) from Zanzibar, Tanzania. This collaboration was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on the development of the Fish Processing Study Program. The MoU was signed by the Vice Rector for Global Connectivity, Collaboration, and Alumni, IPB University, Prof. Iskandar Zulkarnaen Siregar, together with Dr. Mahmoud Abdulwahab Alawi, the Principal of KIST. The signing took place in the Rector’s meeting room of the Andi Hakim Nasoetion Building, IPB Dramaga.

In addition to the KIST delegation, the meeting was also attended by Mr. Khalid M. Waziri, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Administration and Planning at the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, Zanzibar, Tanzania. “I express my support for strengthening academic cooperation and capacity building in the field of blue economy, which is the main focus of this collaboration” said Mr. Waziri. As part of their commitment to strengthening the partnership, Dr. Alawi invited IPB University experts to visit KIST, with the goal of building capacity to utilize marine products, and enhancing student and faculty exchanges between the two institutions.

Both parties will also take advantage of an upcoming meeting with the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, IPB University to explore potential areas of collaboration, which will serve as a foundation for expanding further cooperation. This collaboration is expected to open new opportunities for research and development that will benefit both countries, particularly in the marine and fisheries sectors.
