Interdisciplinary Research

Interdisciplinary Research

IPB has been promoting transdisciplinary research since the last few years marked with the establishment of the Center for Transdisciplinary and Sustainability Science in 2018. Transdisciplinary goes beyond interdisciplinary, and both require collaboration across disciplines.

Internally, IPB has determined interdisciplinary research as a key performance, and delivered particular tasks to the Directorate of Research and Innovation to facilitate collaborative research across disciplines, to the Directorate of Strategic Studies and Academic Reputation to increase the number of interdisciplinary publications, as well as to the Directorate of Global Connectivity to increase the number of international research consortia.

Several measures of interdisciplinary research success determined by IPB University, including:

(1) number of publications

IPB regularly monitors its publication performance, particularly that involving international partners and their relevance to SDGs through external and internal platforms, namely: SINTA, a national platform provided by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education, Scopus  and more detail information is gained from Scival , SIPPM – an internal platform that provide information about performance of faculty members in research and community empowerment, and SIPAKARIL – an internal platform that provides data about publication performance of individual faculty members

(2) number of citations

IPB University tracks the number of citations resulting from interdisciplinary research collaborations from SCOPUS, SCIVAL, and SINTA and is analyzed by the Directorate of Strategy and Academic Reputation Studies. We also assess the sustainability of research collaborations and its distribution based on the regions or countries indicated by the International Research Network (IRN) Index as shown at our national platform https://sinta.kemdikbud.go.id/wcu/overview3.

(3) number of new international research consortia

The Directorate of Global Connectivity is responsible for managing data of international research consortia. This data is reported to SIMAKER – an internal platform to report university achievement at this indicator. List of active consortia can be seen in this link: https://global.ipb.ac.id/research-consortia/.

(4) number of competitive grants for interdisciplinary research received by the faculty members;

The type of grants includes the one provided by the Indonesian Ministry, G to G matching fund scheme, the university and other international funds. In 2023, IPB had more than 600 research topics funded by various research schemes as mentioned earlier.  The list of research topics, principle researchers and type of funding schemes can be seen in this link: https://dri.ipb.ac.id/riset-skematik-ipb-yang-dikelola-dri-tahun-2023/. Interdisciplinary research were funded under various schemes, including: BPDPKS (page 1), National Competitive Applied Research – PTKN, Pendanaan Riset dan Inovasi untuk Indonesia Maju – RIIM by BRIN (page 14-15), Action Research (page 19), RISPRO LPDP (page 19-20), RKI PTNBH (page 20), UKICIS (page 20-21).

(5) number of innovations and patents

Resulted from the interdisciplinary research collaboration. Since December 2020, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education launched Kedaireka Program, namely matching fund program that link academia and industry to promote downstreaming research outputs and innovation produced by universities. IPB actively participates in this program and has received the highest number of grants. Reports of Kedaireka Program by IPB and  posters of individual projects funded can be seen at this link: https://stp.ipb.ac.id/program-matching-fund-kedaireka-ipb-tahun-2023/.

(6) number of policy recommendations

(Policy briefs) produced by research teams including those related to interdisciplinary science research. In 2022, IPB established an online platform to publish policy briefs produced by its faculty members (https://journal.ipb.ac.id/index.php/agro-maritim/issue/archive). This platform serves as a medium to disseminate knowledge resulting from research to a wider audience and is expected to create impact on societal changes.

Our facilities that support interdisciplinary research include laboratories, field laboratories and stations, teaching factories, and libraries. These facilities are located in several campus areas and provide shared laboratory space, equipment/instruments, meeting rooms, and office space to support collaborative research projects. Some are managed by the university, some others by faculties and research centers.

Workshops to support publication in 2023:

IPB University is highly committed to enhance interdisciplinary research, as stated in the Academic Senate Regulation No 36/IT3.SA/P/2020 anAcademic Senate Regulation No 10/SA-IPB/P/2016.

As a state university, IPB University adopts the tenure and career promotion system set up by the government.  Every lecturer is required to carry out the Tri Dharma of Higher Education which is derived from the state mandate for higher education in Indonesia. The Tri Dharma of Higher Education includes teaching, research and community service. Based on this mandate, the promotion system also contains these three elements. Research has a minimum proportion of 40 percent of the total credit points. Lecturer career levels include prospective lecturer (calon dosen), assistant professor (asisten ahli & lektor), associate professor (lektor kepala), and full professor. Each career level requires particular total credit points.

Research is an important element in the career system at a university, and the credit point is assessed through publications resulting from research that has been carried out. The assessment of credit point refers to the Operational Guidelines for Credit Point Assessment for Promotion of Lecturer Academic Rank/Position issued by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education in 2019. This operational guideline has been renewed recently through the Decree of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology No. 209 of 2024 concerning Technical Instructions for the Implementation of Professional and Career Development and Guidance Services for Lecturers.

The scientific publication credit score is determined by the quality of the journal in which the article is published. Journals with international reputation and those with high impact factors will get higher scores. In this regard, interdisciplinary research, especially those resulting from international research collaborations, has a high chance of being published in top journals, resulting in higher credit points for career promotion.  In addition, to be promoted as a professor, a lecturer should demonstrate their record in leading a research team funded by a competitive grant.

To encourage lecturers’ career promotion, IPB University has a promotion system specifically dedicated to recognizing interdisciplinary research among science disciplines.

  1. IPB encourages the establishment of research consortiums nationally and internationally.
  2. Highlighting innovations resulting from interdisciplinary research on the university’s website, in the innovation Gallery, and various exhibitions held or participated by IPB University.
  3. Providing incentives for publication and citation, particularly for academic staff publishing in journals that span multiple disciplines.
  4. Providing affirmative research grants for research groups. In this regard, IPB also encourages the establishment of research groups involving researchers from various disciplines, such as  BRAIN, a research group on Blockchain, Robotics, and Artificial Intelligence Network.
  5. Giving awards to the most productive departments/faculties and outstanding lecturers, especially those who have produced research and innovation from interdisciplinary work. Categories in IPB Award 2023 related to research and innovation are :
  1. Unit with the Best Research Productivity (national competitive and decentralization research)
  2. Units with the Highest Research Funding
  3. Lecturers with the best publication performance
  4. Unit with Best Publication Performance
  5. Best Inventor
  6. Best Innovator
  7. Unit with the Most Innovation
  8. Best Innovation Partner
