Summer Course – Marine Science and Technology
Marine Tropical Ecology
Program Overview
Indonesia boasts the world’s highest marine biodiversity, establishing itself as a global biodiversity hotspot. With an extensive maritime territory—including its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)—covering approximately 5.8 million km² and a 95,161 km-long coastline, the country is rich in marine and coastal resources. As the largest archipelagic nation, Indonesia’s diverse marine ecosystems—ranging from estuaries and mangrove forests to seagrass beds and coral reefs—play a vital role in biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.
One of the most striking examples of this rich biodiversity is Kepulauan Seribu (Thousand Islands), which serves as a habitat for a wide array of marine species, including coral reef fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and echinoderms. This region holds immense value for both conservation efforts and sustainable economic development.
To deepen students’ understanding of marine biodiversity and conservation strategies, THE 5th MARINE TROPICAL ECOLOGY Expanding Horizons: Indonesian Marine Tropical Ecology and the Ocean Resilience on Small Island offers an international academic experience. This program combines interactive lectures, hands-on fieldwork, and collaborative research, providing a unique experiential learning opportunity in one of the world’s most biodiverse marine environments.
