OPT Challenge
[POSTPONED] Oil Palm Trunk Product Challenge
Palm oil production generates a significant amount of palm oil trunks (OPTs) as a by-product. These trunks are often discarded or burned, contributing to environmental concerns. This project aims to explore the potential of utilizing OPTs as a sustainable and innovative material for furniture production.
Competition Objectives :
- To investigate the feasibility of using palm oil trunks for furniture/interior decoration/building materials or construction.
- To develop innovative furniture designs that utilize the unique properties of OPTs.
- To assess the structural integrity, durability, and aesthetics of furniture/interior decoration/building materials or construction and made from OPTs and to explore potential finishing techniques and treatments for OPT furniture/interior decoration/building materials or construction.
- To analyze the environmental and economic benefits of using OPTs for furniture/interior decoration/building materials or construction compared to conventional materials.
- To increase awareness on the potential use of oil palm trunk as sustainable building/furniture/interior decorating materials
- To improve public perception of oil palm trunk materials by emphasizing its aesthetic appeal, durability, and environmental benefits in outreach materials and media coverage
Scope of Competition :
- Competition is open to all interested students in Indonesia
- The maximum number of group members is five persons
- Each group shall submit (can be in English or Bahasa Indonesia):
- Product description containing description, technical data, and explanation on why your design may improve the sustainability of the oil palm
- Video of the product: high resolution; 3 – 5 mins duration
- Photos of the product from different angle: 5 – 10 photos
- 3 finalists will be invited to the One Day Symposium on Oil Palm Trunk that will be held in Bogor. A maximum of 2 persons per group will receive travel grant award to come to Bogor
- Finalist invited to Bogor shall bring their products and other related media (banner, flyer, etc) to Bogor
Deliverables :
- A comprehensive research report on the properties of palm oil trunks and their suitability for furniture/interior decoration/building materials or construction.
- A portfolio of innovative furniture/interior decoration/building materials or construction utilizing palm oil trunks.
- Functional prototypes of the furniture/interior decoration/building materials or construction.
- A final presentation showcasing the research findings, design concepts, prototypes, and future potential of OPT furniture/interior decoration/building materials or construction.
Evaluation Criteria :
The project will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Originality and functionality of the furniture/interior decoration/building materials or construction.
- Craftsmanship and quality of the prototypes.
- Depth and quality of research on OPT properties and furniture/interior decoration/building materials or construction.
- Clarity and effectiveness of the final presentation.
Awards :
3 finalists will be invited to Jakarta to present their prototypes.
- 1st place winner will get an award of 1000 EUR
- 2nd place winner will get 500 EUR
- 3rd place winner will get 250 EUR
Timeline :
- 20 July 2024: Deadline for design submission through the website
- 1 August 2024: 1st round result announcement (desk evaluation)
- 20 August 2024: Final presentation of 3 finalist in Bogor. Bring your prototypes!
