Palm oil production generates a significant amount of palm oil trunks (OPTs) as a by-product. These trunks are often discarded or burned, contributing to environmental concerns. This project aims to explore the potential of utilizing OPTs as a sustainable and innovative material for furniture production.

Competition Objectives :

1. Promote the utilization of OPT in design and manufacturing.
2. Encourage innovation and sustainability in material usage.
3. Identify viable and scalable design solutions for OPT applications.
4. Support eco-friendly initiatives within the industry.

Competition Specifications:

Theme	From Waste to Wealth: unlocking the potential of OPT
Design specifications	The competition is open to designs in the concept stages including furniture, accessories, homeware, and others.
Who can participate?	This competition is open to students from various disciplines, including industrial design, environmental science, and engineering.
Team	We accept submissions from teams of up to three members. only 1 design per team is allowed.
Selection stage	2 stages of selection will be conducted. Stage 1 selection will be conducted paper based. 10 best teams will be invited to Stage 2 selection. Stage 2 selection will be conducted based on video and presentation. The presentation will be conducted hybrid.
Fee	Participation is free of costs, but any costs related to submitting your design concept are borne by the participant

 

Timeline

• 2 August 2025: Concept note submission deadline 
• 16 August 2025: Announcement of 10 selected teams 
• 30 August 2025: Submit video to organizing committee
• 1 September: Submit presentation to organizing committee
• 2 September 2025: Presentations selected participants (could be online)
• 3 September 2025: Announcement of the winners

• 1st Winner                       : EUR 750
• 2nd Winner                      : EUR 350
• 3rd Winner                       : EUR 150
• Best Video                        : EUR 50
• Best Presentation            : EUR 50

Winners will get honourable mention on academic and SustainPalm social media.

All participants in this competition will get networking opportunities and experience working in an international development setting, as well as receive an E-certificate.
